Richard Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974. Born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913, he was the second of five children. Nixon graduated from Whittier College in 1934 and then from Duke University School of Law in 1937. He practiced law in California before entering politics in the 1940s.
In 1946, Nixon was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican and he then won a seat in the US Senate in 1950. In 1952, he became the Vice President of the United States under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was reelected as Vice President in 1956. In 1960, he lost the presidential election to John F. Kennedy.
Nixon ran for president again in 1968 and won, defeating Democrat Hubert H. Humphrey. He was reelected in 1972, but his presidency was marred by the Watergate scandal. In 1974, Nixon became the first U.S. president to resign from office, after it was revealed that he was involved in the cover-up of the Watergate break-in.
After leaving office, Nixon retired from public life and wrote several books, including his memoirs. He died on April 22, 1994, at the age of 81.
Nixon’s presidency was marked by several significant achievements, including the opening of relations with China, the end of the Vietnam War, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
